One of the most popular options for contactless payment for iOS users is Apple Pay.
You can link a debit card, credit card, or gift card to your Apple Wallet to digitally save it there for future contactless payment.
Customers just need to pull up their wallet app, tap their phone to the vendor’s payment system, verify their identity with Face ID or a passcode, and that’s it.
Though not all vendors have caught up with the times, a lot of gas stations have.

Self-serve gas stations are not always easy.
It can be a lot of work to shuffle between the gas pump, your car, and your credit card.
Apple Pay makes things just a bit easier!
All you need to bring with you is your phone or Apple Watch (which you probably have on you anyway).
Some gas stations have opted to only allow Apple Pay outside, and all other payment methods need to be processed inside.
Even the credit cards that have the easier “tap to pay” option, will not be viable for contactless payment at the gas stations that only permit Apple Pay.
In fact, you do not even need a credit or debit card to use Apple Pay.
You can also use an iTunes or American Express gift card.
This is perfect for individuals who do not have credit or debit cards or would prefer to keep their cards separate from their technology.
How To Use Apple Pay
Now that you know what gas stations accept Apple Pay, there are several questions you might have about the process.
As explained at the beginning of this article, using Apple Pay on your iPhone or Apple watch is easy, but some gas stations have more challenging payment processes, so here is a quick overview of how to enable Apple Pay at the gas station.
- Look for the contactless payment symbol at the gas station.
- On your smartphone or watch, open the Apple Wallet.
- Double click the side button.
- Verify your identity via a Face ID, Touch ID, or a passcode.
- Place your smartphone or watch near the payment system screen.
- The transaction should go through.
You don’t have to do anything specific at the pump to access the Apple Pay option.
When you get to the payment screen that asks you to insert or tap your card, simply tap your phone instead.
Apple also makes it easy to determine which gas stations accept its contactless payment method.
To do this, you can open Apple Maps, search “gas stations near me,” and then choose a station.
Then, you can click “useful to know.”
This information should indicate whether the station takes Apple Pay.
As a relatively new piece of technology, there are sometimes flaws with the system.
It is important to keep a credit card, debit card, or cash with you just in case Apple Pay is rejected for some reason.
If that happens, verify with an attendant that you are following all the required steps.
It could be that your specific terminal is not functioning well with Apple Pay, or it could be a problem with your card.
You can try again with a different credit or debit card that you have linked to Apple Pay.
You could also try restarting your device, logging out and re-signing into your Apple ID, and forcing Apple Wallet to close.
Why Use Apple Pay?
Overall, Apple Pay is a uniquely beneficial technology.
If you have not tried it yet, it might be worth testing out.
Here are some reasons Apple Pay might be worth a try.
1. It Is A Secure Payment Method
Apple Pay is safer than credit or debit cards because it does not share your personal information with the vendor.
If you use credit or debit cards at a gas station, your card number is automatically shared with the system to process the transaction.
However, if the system’s confidentiality is somehow breached, your payment information will be incidentally shared.
This will not happen if you use Apple Pay.
When you add a card to Apple Pay, Apple generates a new number to be associated with the digital version of your card, so that it does not hold onto your original card information.
2. It Is Faster And Easier
Instead of having to keep track of your credit and debit cards or taking a long time at the pump fishing for your card, all you need do is tap your phone to the payment screen with Apple Pay.
This means you can get on with your day faster.
3. You Get Cash Back When You Pay With An Apple Card
Apple recently unveiled a new feature that goes along with Apple Pay.
The Apple Card is Apple’s form of payment card that is available exclusively in the digital sphere.
When you link your Apple Card to Apple Pay, you get 2% cashback on all Apple Pay transactions.
You will also receive 3% on purchases at select retailers including Walgreens and the iOS app stores.
If you are a loyal Apple fan, you will also get 5% cashback on all Apple purchases.
You can use your cash back towards any Apple Pay purchases, or you can transfer the balance to your bank.
4. It Is The Future
As cash becomes obsolete, credit and debit cards eventually will, too.
The world is moving towards digital currency, and gas stations are ready for the inevitable shift.
By getting yourself accustomed to Apple Pay now, you will be setting yourself up for a more successful and easier future when you need to adapt to later financial technology.
What If You Don’t Have Apple Pay?
If you do not have an iOS device, it is likely that most of the gas stations that accept Apple Pay also accept alternative contactless payment methods such as Samsung Pay, Alexa, Venmo, PayPal, Zelle, and more.
If you do not know where Apple Pay is accepted, you can check Apple Maps and click on a specific gas station, to find out what payment methods are taken.
With 32 gasoline retailers that accept Apple Pay throughout the United States, you are sure to find one on your road trip.
