We have seen Victor Wembanyama of the San Antonio Spurs play a couple of Summer League games but he will be training and resting until the regular season starts in the fall.
That means that until then, we will all be playing a different game: the expectations game.
Hopes are very high for Wembanyama, who could be a transformative and generational talent, according to many analysts.
Or he could be a wash, according to others.
Speaking to Fox Sports Radio, former NBA player Olden Polynice said Wembanyama “hopes to be better than Shawn Bradley.”
“I’m not even putting him in the Yao Ming category yet,” he added.
Polynice’s comments got some pushback from co-host Martin Weiss as well as a lot of surprise from Chris Broussard.
Bradley was a seven-foot-six German big man who never truly became the sort of star that fans had hoped for.
He was the second overall pick in the 1993 NBA Draft and started his career with the Philadelphia 76ers.
Although he began his time in the league scoring 10 points a game, he never built upon that.
When he exited the league in 2005, he was averaging just 2.7 points and 2.8 rebounds per game with just 11.5 minutes on the floor.
Spurs fans are very hopeful that Wembanyama is definitely not like Bradley.
It’s been a long time since an NBA rookie has received the sort of hype that this French rookie has.
Of course, there is a chance that he never lives up to it.
After his first Summer League game, some people were speculating that perhaps he wasn’t yet ready to really make an impact on the NBA.
But he rebounded with a much stronger second game and now most followers are cautiously optimistic about what his first season will bring.
