Do you have a craving for the fast food chain Jack in the Box but need to pass unless they take Apple Pay?
Apple Pay gives you the ability to pay for your food without your card, which comes in handy if you accidentally left your card at home.
However, can you go to Jack in the Box, or will you need to opt for your next favorite fast food chain that does accept Apple Pay?
Does Jack In The Box Take Apple Pay?
Yes, you can pay for your food at Jack in the Box using Apple Pay when you order in the store or through the drive-thru.
Jack in the Box actually jumped on the Apple Pay wagon relatively early.
Jack in the Box originated in Southern California, which is at the forefront when it comes to technology and innovation.
According to an article in 2019, corporate added the ability to accept Apple Pay to all 2,200 Jack in the Box locations.
Jack in the Box does not accept Apple Pay payments through the app, however.

What Is Apple Pay?
Apple Pay gives you the option to pay for your items with your smartphone or smartwatch using the app referred to as your mobile wallet.
Apple Pay uses NFC technology to transfer data, such as credit card information or debit card information, from an app in your phone (Apple Wallet) to a POS (Point of Sale) system.
The system connects your financial institution to the merchant’s payment processor similar to your credit card but wirelessly.
The technology works similarly to Bluetooth but on a much smaller scale and without the need to manually connect the devices.
In order for the two devices to connect, the POS system must have NFC capability and your phone must be on with adequate battery life.
Today, more than 85% of all merchants in the United States accept NFC payments.
You can also use your mobile wallet to pay for items that you buy on your phone (as long as the app gives you the option to pay using Apple Pay).
There is no charge to use Apple Pay.
You can add up to eight cards to your Apple Wallet app.
You can also add transit cards and loyalty cards to your mobile wallet.
Alternative Mobile Wallets
You don’t necessarily need to use Apple’s mobile wallet, and you can’t use Apple Pay if you don’t use an Apple product.
Android phones generally come with the options of Google Pay and Samsung Pay, but there are additional less popular mobile wallets, too.
Any POS system that accepts Apple Pay can accept other mobile wallets.
The major mobile wallets only have minor differences that don’t significantly affect most consumers.
PayPal is not a mobile wallet. You can add PayPal to your Google Pay or Samsung Pay app, but you can’t add your PayPal account to your Apple Wallet as they are competitors.
How To Set Up Apple Pay
Before you can use Apple Pay, you will need to set it up.
Luckily, it’s relatively easy to do.
Follow these simple steps to set up Apple Pay and pay for your Jack in the Box order even when you forget your card.
1. Open App
All iPhones come with the Apple Wallet pre-downloaded on the phone.
To search for the app, you can start by looking at your home screen and scrolling through your apps.
You can also use your phone’s search feature.
If for some reason you have deleted your app, you can download it through the app store for free.
2. Add Card Information
Once you open your app, you will use the “+” button to add your debit card or credit card.
Start by selecting the appropriate type of card.
After you select the type of card you plan to add, you will enter the card details (card number, expiration date, and security code).
You can enter the card details using your phone’s camera, or you can enter the details manually.
Double-check your card details before you submit them.
Otherwise, you may experience an error.
3. Verify With Bank
After you submit your card details, your bank will require verification.
They may require you to sign in to the app or enter a security code.
If the card was not properly verified, you will see a notice indicating “verification required”.
If you struggle with the verification process, you can call your bank for help or ask a bank teller to assist you.
Some financial institutions may allow you to add your card details through their app.
4. Confirm
After you confirm your card with your financial institution, you should see your card in your mobile wallet.
When finished, test your mobile wallet by making a purchase.
Bring your card with you in case you didn’t add the card correctly for some reason.
Benefits Of Using Apple Pay
Why use Apple Pay instead of paying using your card?
We will cover some of the ways you will benefit from using Apple Pay.
1. Convenience
One of the greatest benefits of Apple Pay is convenience.
You can use Apple Pay quickly and easily without digging in your wallet for the card you want, which comes in handy when you have multiple cards.
You also have the additional benefit of not needing your physical card in case you left your wallet at home.
2. Security
When your mobile wallet transfers data to Jack in the Box’s POS system, it doesn’t send your actual card information.
Instead, it uses an encrypted code.
This protects you from hackers that gain access to Jack in the Box’s system.
3. Sanitation
With cardless payments, you may not even need to interact with the POS system.
However, this isn’t always the case.
You may still need to enter a PIN or provide a signature, depending on your financial institution and the POS system.
If you do need to interact with the POS system, it’s a good idea to use hand sanitizer first (especially these days).
Jack in the Box made a point to upgrade all systems to contactless POS systems even before COVID (bet they feel good about that decision!).
4. Payments Of The Future
Everything is turning digital and with good reason (see above).
Don’t fight the change in consumer trends.
Embrace them.
Learning how to use Apple Pay and becoming familiar with mobile wallets can prepare you for the next change in payment technology when it comes.
Plus, you don’t want to appear uninformed when other people bring up the technology.
Paying With Apple Pay Inside The Store
Unsure how to pay with your mobile wallet?
Follow these steps to pay at a Jack in the Box store using Apple Pay.
1. Open Phone
Unlock your phone to get started.
To use Apple Pay, you will need to have standard security on your phone to access it.
Common security methods of unlocking your phone include:
- Fingerprint
- Facial recognition
- PIN
- Password
- Pattern
This helps ensure that no one else can make a payment with your mobile wallet if you accidentally lose your phone.
If you opted not to put a lock on your phone when you set it up, you will need to add it before you can use Apple Pay.
2. Open App
After you access your phone, you will need to open your app.
Do not open the app too early, or it may shut down before you reach the register.
When you open the app, verify that your preferred card is selected.
3. Swipe Phone Near POS
Once the employee tells you your total, hold your phone near the POS system.
NFC technology should work within a couple of feet, but you should keep it no more than a few inches away from the POS system.
Once you swipe your phone near the credit card terminal, you should see a recognition of the connection on both your phone and the POS System.
4. Finalize Order
After you’ve established a connection, you will notice a green checkmark indicating that the payment went through successfully.
As we mentioned before, you may be required to enter your PIN or provide a signature at other locations, but Jack in the Box thoughtfully uses completely contactless systems.
5. Enjoy Your Food
At this point, you get to enjoy your food.
Jack in the Box offers a wide range of food at reasonable prices.
May we suggest the tiny tacos and French fries?
Can I Pay With Apple Pay At Jack In The Box Through The Drive-Thru?
You can pay for your food with Apple Pay through Jack in the Box’s drive-thru.
However, it may be a tad more awkward.
You may need to reach a bit to swipe your phone near the credit card terminal.
Luckily, your friendly Jack in the Box employee will be familiar with the process and should make things relatively simple for you.
Why Didn’t My Apple Pay Payment Work In-Store?
Sometimes, technology doesn’t work as seamlessly as expected at first.
Here are some of the reasons your Apple Pay payment might not have worked at Jack in the Box (and what to do about it).
1. User Error
Ultimately, the problem may be you (at first) if you didn’t hold the phone close enough or went too quickly.
Don’t feel bad. Just try again.
Using your mobile wallet will become effortless with time.
2. Wrong Card
You may have used the wrong card.
Go back to your mobile wallet to ensure that you have the correct card selected.
Luckily, this is a quick fix.
You can change your default card at any time if you have changed cards or changed your preferred payment method.
3. Unverified Card
You will not be able to pay with a card on your mobile wallet if it isn’t verified with your bank yet.
As we said, you will have a clear notice that says “Verification Required” if you do need to verify a specific card.
4. Insufficient Funds
You may not have a problem with Apple Pay but your account.
If your payment gets denied, check that you have adequate funds in your account.
5. Low Battery
NFC technology requires a significant amount of battery power.
You may not be able to use Apple Pay if your phone is under 20% or running on power saver settings.
What Happens When A Card In My Mobile Wallet Expires?
When you add a card to your mobile wallet, you are connecting that specific card and not your bank account.
When the card expires, you won’t be able to use that card anymore.
You will have an indicator in the app that the card is expired when you open it.
If you notice an expired card, you will simply delete it and select your new default card.
You have the option to delete cards with an easy delete button when you select the card in question.
Apple Pay And Your Apple Watch
You can add cards to your mobile wallet on your Apple Watch for additional convenience.
You can also add cards to your mobile wallet on your laptop or iPad for online purchases.
When you add a card to the mobile wallet on your iPhone, that does not automatically add the cards to the mobile wallet on your other devices.
Add your card using a similar methodology as when you added it to your phone and verify before relying on it to make a purchase.
Jack In The Box App
