Los Angeles Dodgers‘ star Justin Turner had some words after learning Derek Jeter stepped down as the Miami Marlins’ CEO and part owner.
Jeter shocked the baseball world by revealing that the Marlins’ current direction wasn’t the same he says they had in 2017 when he took over as the leading baseball man in Miami.
“Hot take: My sources, common sense and reading in between the lines, tell me that one of our games greatest champions, Derek Jeter, is stepping away from a team with one of the best young pitching staffs in the game because ownership isn’t committed to winning and spending,” Turner said.

There are several takeaways from his tweet.
Jeter Just Wanted To Compete
First, he sees the Marlins as one of the best up-and-coming forces in the National League, or at least recognizes that their pitching staff, which Jeter helped build, is full of promise.
Second, it has already been established that Jeter likes to win: perhaps the Marlins, as Joel Sherman reported today, didn’t want to give Jeter the money they promised him to invest on the roster, and that fueled his departure.
And third, with number two being a likely scenario that contributed for Jeter’s decision to step away, one of MLB’s biggest problems right now is evidenced: teams not trying hard enough to win.
When teams like the Marlins don’t recognize their chances to compete as great, they completely move away from any big expenses on the roster and may enter a tanking period.
This is likely what was transpiring in Miami: Jeter wanted to win, the rest of the ownership didn’t want to spend.
It makes one wonder how MLB lets people who don’t want to compete be owners.
