The NFL is a huge income-generating machine.
In sponsorship rights fees alone, the league increased its year-on-year revenue by 12 percent to $1.8 billion in the 2021-22 season.
Teams also generate millions of dollars every game through ticket sales, television deals, and merchandise sales.
The league is also conquering overseas markets through its International Series.
But while the NFL expands its global reach, it could also open up new markets in the United States.
That’s why Dallas Mayor Eric Johnson had an interesting suggestion to the league.
The answer is Dallas. Why? We are about to pass the Chicago metro and become the #3 metro in the US, which would make us the largest US metro WITHOUT 2 teams. Football is king here. Dallas needs an expansion team and we would be able to sustain 2 @NFL teams better than LA or NY. https://t.co/ikG0oeZq4T

The NFL on CBS Twitter page asked, “If the NFL announced a new expansion team, what city do you think most deserves it?”
To which Johnson responded, “The answer is Dallas. Why? We are about to pass the Chicago metro and become the #3 metro in the US, which would make us the largest US metro WITHOUT 2 teams. Football is king here. Dallas needs an expansion team and we would be able to sustain 2 @NFL teams better than LA or NY.”
Mayor Johnson Makes Sense
The mayor has a point, especially when he says that football is king in the Lone Star State.
High school football teams have stadiums that can rival those of collegiate teams.
Meanwhile, there is also prestige for a Texas kid to play football for one of the state’s marquee programs.
Adding another NFL team in the Dallas metropolis is a sustainable operation because fans can’t get enough football.
Therefore, the additional team will attract a massive fanbase.
They could even place the team in Fort Worth to avoid territorial conflict with the Dallas Cowboys.
If New York has the Giants and the Jets, and Los Angeles has the Rams and the Chargers, a football-crazy city should also have two teams.
However, it’s tough to see that happening given the weight Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has with the rest of the NFL’s team owners.
