The St. Louis Cardinals are a team that prides itself on a winning tradition, with each generation of fans seeing more than their fair share of great moments, teams, and players.
But that greatness even stretches as far as the broadcast booth, where legendary announcers such as Harry Caray, Jack Buck, and Mike Shannon have made their mark.
One of Shannon’s color analysts, John Rooney, is now the full-time play-by-play announcer on KMOX, the local radio station of the Cardinals.
Today just so happens to be Rooney’s birthday.
On Twitter, the Cardinals wished their longtime radio announcer a very happy birthday.

Rooney joined the Cardinals radio network in 2006 and was on hand for the team’s first World Series title in nearly a quarter century.
The 69-year-old Richmond, Missouri native began his broadcasting career in the 1970s.
In 1980, he began calling games for the Oklahoma 89ers, a minor league affiliate for the Los Angeles Dodgers.
He also called Missouri Tigers men’s basketball and served as an announcer with the Chicago Bulls from 1989-1991.
He began his Major League Baseball broadcasting career in the mid-1980s with the Minnesota Twins before joining the Chicago White Sox in 1988.
He served as the White Sox radio announcer until after the 2005 season, with his final game being the clinching Game 4 of the World Series.
Rooney was also on hand for the Cardinals’ improbable run to their 11th World Series title in 2011.
Today, he serves alongside former Cardinals pitcher Ricky Horton, who is now the color analyst for KMOX.
