On Wednesday night, fans of the St. Louis Cardinals felt a familiar sting when it was announced that Sandy Alcantara, one of the pitchers that the team traded away in 2017 in order to acquire Marcell Ozuna from the Miami Marlins, earned the National League Cy Young Award.
Alcantara posted a 14-9 record and an ERA of 2.28 in 32 starts this season with the Marlins, earning his second All-Star nod.
While Cardinals fans may still be hurting over the loss of Alcantara, one fan found a silver lining.
Two years after the trade was made, Ozuna had an embarrassing moment out in left field, attempting to jump off the wall and catch a fly ball.
It didn’t work out, but the Cardinals fan below joked that one day this play will be shown in Cooperstown.
Look, winning Cy Young is cool and all, but at the end of the day it’s just an award that’s going to sit on a shelf.
A play like this, now that’s a memory that lasts forever. They should have a video of this playing in Cooperstown.pic.twitter.com/Uhgn4iWdJL— Quinn (@QuinnSTLCards) November 16, 2022
Ozuna’s Unfortunate Leap
This may have been the best baseball blooper in recent memory.
At first, Ozuna misjudged the ball and thought it was going out, so he climbed the wall.
But by the time he realized it wasn’t going out, he realized that he had to turn to a different strategy, which was to hilariously jump off the wall as if he were Spider-Man to try and make the catch.
Of course, Ozuna landed on the ground and came nowhere close to catching the ball, which made it even more hilarious.
But the point the fan was trying to make was that a Cy Young Award is just something a pitcher puts on his shelf as a memento.
This blooper will simply live on forever.
