While the St. Louis Cardinals have a wealth of young prospects who are prepared to help the team win in the near future, there are some issues with the way they handle some of their young players.
This offseason has been a prime example of such issues.
The team came into the offseason in need of some upgrades, specifically in the starting rotation.
Unfortunately, they let all the major free agent starters sign elsewhere and have only accomplished one thing, which is the signing of Willson Contreras.
Trades are another way they could upgrade the roster, but they often are hesitant to part ways with prospects, as one fan points out.
Sure, if the Cardinals care about winning and finally decide to trade prospects like Ivan Herrera instead of hoarding them. #stlcards https://t.co/rQcwVudTNQ

Without question, the Cardinals have solid young talent in their system, but they have a nasty habit of holding onto each and every one of them at times.
This has been evident in recent trade deadlines where the team has stood pat.
Any criticism is usually met with a statement about the team not wanting to sacrifice its future.
And while it’s understandable that the team highly values its young talent, there isn’t going to be a spot for everyone in the system.
The outfield in particular is crowded.
Players like Moises Gomez and Juan Yepez could potentially be blocked.
However, they could use some of those pieces to add some pitching depth, but they still are hesitant to let go of certain prospects.
That is a practice that the organization could look to change in the future if they want to contend for a World Series title again.
