The Winter Meetings are fast approaching, and thus far, we have not had much activity in the free agent or trade markets.
Fans of the St. Louis Cardinals know the feeling of a quiet offseason all too well, and are quite frankly tired of each offseason bringing more of the same.
President of Baseball Operations John Mozeliak had commented that he intended to increase the team’s payroll, citing a big bat and a catcher as the two most glaring needs.
However, there are other areas the Cardinals need to improve in if they want to compete with the top tier teams, and one fan on Twitter pointed out that reality, saying that if the Cards want to “go for it,” more needs to be done.
Front office says they need a catcher who can hit, and a DH who is preferably good against lefties like Pujols was. of course I agree, but this only fills holes. Need more than that if they want to portray they are "going for it" in 2023. #STLCards pic.twitter.com/hT6wgLLTjM

Cardinals Offseason Needs
The two most obvious areas of potential improvement are the outfield and the starting rotation.
Both Tyler O’Neill and Dylan Carlson underperformed, with the former dealing with several nagging injuries that cost him time during the regular season.
The organization is high on Lars Nootbaar, but the young outfielder still needs to hit more consistently.
In the starting rotation, there are plenty of question marks.
On paper, it’s a good rotation, but St. Louis has dealt with a rash of pitching injuries over the past few seasons.
Jack Flaherty and Steven Matz both enter the 2023 season with question marks due to them both missing significant time with injuries.
While Adam Wainwright was healthy the whole season, his September was horrendous, and he lost his rotation spot in the postseason.
St. Louis could stand to add a frontline starter to prepare for the inevitability of pitching injuries.

DJSMOOTH says
This cardinal situation on signing a top player is not going to change. As long as people keep going to the games to watch a hope and a prayer team, things are not going to change. I just don’t understand why a team as the cardinals won’t do better to put a winner on the field. Moe sucks as a GM, Walt Jockerty was the best. Wake up Cardinal nation, we should demand better.
