Calvin Ridley Speaks Out About His Ban For Gambling

In April 2021, the Atlanta Falcons exercised their fifth-year option for Calvin Ridley worth $11.1 million.

It was a calculated bet for a player who only suited up in five games last season after stepping away due to mental health reasons.

However, it looks like the option will kick in during the 2023 season after Ridley got suspended by the league due to gambling.

The former Alabama standout got caught after placing a legal bet on the only gambling platform allowed in Florida.

The bet’s recipient notified Genius Sports, which oversees betting integrity for the league.

Reports reveal that Ridley placed three, five, and eight-game parlay bets that included his team.

Instead of keeping quiet, Ridley is fighting back, saying that he’s not obsessed with placing wagers.

I bet 1500 total I don’t have a gambling problem

After the news broke out, Ridley tweeted “I bet 1500 total I don’t have a gambling problem.”

That short statement above proves that he did place a bet which is not allowed under current NFL rules.

Banning gambling among players will keep them from manipulating a game’s outcome to win a massive payday.

It is a concern that must be addressed to keep the game’s integrity.

Is Ridley Having Some Money Problems?

The wideout earned $10.9 million throughout the first four years of his contract and he has exceeded expectations.

He had a breakout 2020 season, finishing with 90 receptions, 1,374 yards, and nine touchdowns.

But as impressive as his numbers are, he only took home a base salary of $1.4 million that season.

Anyone who is not well-versed with financial literacy could blow through that amount easily.

Therefore, there’s a chance that Ridley is gambling because he hasn’t been wise with his money.

With him suspended, he must find another way to earn money for one season.
