The New York Yankees 2022 season ended in disappointment, with a heart-breaking sweep at the hands of the Houston Astros in the American League Championship Series.
Their manager Aaron Boone is currently under contract, and will return for the 2023 season.
General manager Brian Cashman, however, is technically a “free agent” at the moment, since his contract expired already.
Oddly enough, he offered a press conference in which he discussed several things, including his own future with the organization.
There weren’t many concrete answers or realities, though, but he said the franchise is interested in him staying.
“Brian Cashman said his contract expired October 31, but Hal Steinbrenner has expressed interest in him remaining as the #Yankees’ GM,” Yankees insider Bryan Hoch tweeted.

It’s a bit surprising to see him out there answering questions when he is currently not under contract, but he is also not going to stop working without announcing it to the press.
He is, most likely, returning for another period.
Cashman Didn’t Escape Criticism
Despite winning 99 games in the regular season and making it to the ALCS, Cashman received a lot of criticism for his failure to compete with the Astros.
The organization has seemingly failed to keep up with the Astros and other elite franchises in player development, especially on the offensive side.
And they don’t seem to trust the prospects they have: because of an odd fixation on Isiah Kiner-Falefa, they failed to give Oswald Peraza time to develop and it cost them in the playoffs.
Deadline trades (most notably the one for Frankie Montas) didn’t work out, and Kiner-Falefa and Josh Donaldson both disappointed offensively.
If Cashman stays, he has a lot of work to do if he wants to return to the World Series.
