The Boston Celtics tried to join the 2004 Boston Red Sox in coming back from a 3-0 series deficit in the postseason.
Instead, they joined the 2023 Boston Bruins as the two teams to lose a Game 7 at home against a No. 8 seed.
Boston becomes first city to lose a home Game 7 to an 8-seed in both hockey and basketball in the same season.

The Bruins failed to get the job done vs. the Florida Panthers, even though they led their division throughout the regular season.
Likewise, the Celtics were the second-best team in the Eastern Conference, yet they dropped the ball with three consecutive losses to start the Eastern Conference Finals vs. the Miami Heat.
The Celtics deserved a lot of credit for bouncing back and fighting their way back into the series, as most teams would’ve given up and looked forward to getting their vacations started.
Nonetheless, it’s not like they should’ve been in this position in the first place, as they were a fairly superior team in most positions, and had the better record and the most favorable matchup, not to mention home-court advantage.
All things considered, this season is a massive failure for the Celtics organization and one that will come back to haunt them for years to come.
As a matter of fact, some fans and analysts are already urging the team to just blow it up and separate Jaylen Brown from Jayson Tatum.
And while the thought of breaking up an All-NBA duo could sound crazy, one could argue that they have nothing left to try at this point as an organization.
