When the San Diego Padres heavily pursued Bob Melvin to manage the team, they knew he was one of the best in the business.
He is regarded as one of the best because he dominates every aspect of managing, and has proven it for a very long time.
He has shown through the years that he can work in an analytics-driven, forward-thinking organization, due to his work with the Oakland Athletics.
But he has also shown he can trust his gut and make important decisions by himself; excellent communication skills, ample baseball knowledge, and perhaps more importantly, he cultivates and promotes trust in all of his relationships.
Padres players already love him, as evidenced by two completely different situations.
Sports anchor Darnay Tripp told a story about how he trusts his starters to take them as deep as they can into a game, not necessarily cutting their outings short.
A True Leader Who Understands Every Aspect Of Managing
“Mike Clevinger on Bob Melvin showing faith in SP, allowing them to go deep in games: ‘It just feels like he’s on your side. It feels like he’s on your team and he’s pulling for you just as much as the guy next to you and that’s a really good feeling to have out of your manager,'” Tripp tweeted.

Melvin understands the value of stats and analytics, but if he feels his starter can give them better performance than his bullpen at a specific moment, he will leave them on the mound.
On the other hand, Dennis Lin of The Athletic told a story about how Melvin communicates with his players.
“Bob Melvin told his players yesterday he was having surgery. ‘He just gave the same confidence he always does in every message,’ Eric Hosmer said. ‘He told us he’d be all right and he’ll be back in no time. … To hear everything went well and smooth is the best news of the day,'” Lin tweeted.

Two different examples to show how a true leader handles himself and communicates with his players.
