Last season, the San Francisco 49ers planned to start the 2022 NFL campaign with Trey Lance as their starting quarterback, with veteran Jimmy Garoppolo set to back him up.
The stage was set for Lance to shine as the new face of the 49ers, as he was finally able to get his chance to show the team and the NFL what he could do on the football field as a starting quarterback.
Unfortunately, Lance went down with a season-ending ankle injury in Week 2 against the Seattle Seahawks, which handed the team back over to Garoppolo, who held his own as the starter until he went down with a season-ending foot injury against the Miami Dolphins on December 4.
This paved the way for rookie quarterback Brock Purdy to take over and lead the way for the 49ers from there on out, which has essentially ended Lance’s chance to be the starter in San Francisco.
Purdy played so well after becoming the starter that he never looked back, as he only lost one game, which was the NFC Championship Game, where he threw and completed four passes before going down with an injury.
On “The Carton Show,” Craig Carton talked about what is the bigger story in San Francisco between the two young quarterbacks.
What’s the bigger story: Purdy’s rise or Trey Lance’s downfall?

With the 49ers investing so much to bring in Lance a couple of years ago, the young quarterback being a disappointment is a major story in the Bay Area, as it seems like he may never get another shot if Purdy turns out to be the real deal.
As Greg Jennings points out in the clip, Purdy’s story is also pretty ridiculous, but Lance’s simply hasn’t been given the time to develop because of his lack of attempts compared to the current starter.
