The window of opportunity for San Francisco 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo is getting smaller as training camp nears.
His current team will go with Trey Lance as their starting quarterback and the trade market for him is dry.
The Niners wouldn’t want to absorb his $24 million base salary in 2022 if they will not benefit from him.
It’s a high cost for a player who might play only if Lance fails as the starter.
However, it’s difficult to see that happening especially with his teammates giving rave reviews for Lance.
Therefore, there’s only one option left for the team, as shared by Niners Nation’s Akash Anavarathan.
It feels like the next step is a release of Jimmy Garoppolo (even if the #49ers have publicly denied it).
The last viable suitor in the Panthers is off the table.

Anavarathan tweeted, “It feels like the next step is a release of Jimmy Garoppolo (even if the #49ers have publicly denied it). The last viable suitor in the Panthers is off the table.”
The Carolina Panthers traded for Baker Mayfield in exchange for a conditional fifth-round selection in the 2024 NFL Draft.
That pick could become a fourth-rounder if Mayfield ends up playing 70 percent of the snaps this year.
Aside from the Panthers, the Seattle Seahawks could be another team that is seeking an upgrade at quarterback.
But despite the rumors, it looks like they will go with Drew Lock, Geno Smith, and Jacob Eason as their play-callers for 2022.
What Happens If Garoppolo Is Released?
If the 49ers release Garoppolo, he will still account for $1.4 million against their salary cap.
It’s a small price to pay for his chance to continue playing elsewhere.
Therefore, he can sign with any team but it would be difficult to see him get an offer for $24 million annually.
Most likely, he will become a backup quarterback which gives him a deal that ranges from $1 million to $2 million per year.
With no other options left for him as a starter, he might get some offers as a backup.
