The San Francisco 49ers had quite a solid season in 2022, but they still have plenty of questions to answer as we head to the off-season.
Kyle Shanahan’s team is stacked with talent at nearly every single position, but QB play continues to be a concern in the Bay area.
The Niners could have three quarterbacks under contract for next season, but Brock Purdy undergoing Tommy John surgery would most likely rule him out of contention.
So, once again, that’ll start the Trey Lance vs. Jimmy Garoppolo debate.
Lance has the highest upside, but he hasn’t been able to stay healthy.
Also, the Niners are built to win now, so they cannot afford to wait until — if — Lance figures things out and plays through his mistakes.
That’s why Niners legend Joe Montana believes Shanahan should just keep on starting Jimmy Garoppolo, who’s won a lot of games and already understands the system:
“I start Jimmy,” Montana said on The Volume. “He has won a lot of games. I can’t say the same for Trey. You don’t know that from him. I don’t think it’s hard — I think you just start Jimmy.”
"You gotta go with the guy that's been winning the games"

Of course, that would make sense every day of the week if it wasn’t for the fact that Jimmy G has also held them back more often than not, and he was the main reason why they went home early in the playoffs two years ago.
Truth be told, perhaps the Niners would be better off just trading Lance away to a rebuilding team and trying to get a veteran and proven winner instead of wasting more time with Garoppolo.
He is what he is at this point and that’s not good enough to win when the season is on the line.
