The San Francisco 49ers have a quarterback situation on their hands.
It’s not that two players are competing for the starting role.
In fact, the franchise has handed the keys to the program to Trey Lance.
He will be the team’s starter for the 2022 season after seeing spot minutes in his rookie year.
However, the issue stems from Jimmy Garoppolo still being with the team.
The 49ers have been trying to look for a trade partner for him but to no avail.
The timing of his shoulder surgery might have hurt his chances of getting traded.
Garoppolo initially thought that no surgery was needed to heal his injury.
Instead, the delay in getting treatment turned off the teams that showed interest.
Therefore, there’s a chance that Lance will start with Garoppolo as the backup.
NBC Sports Bay Area’s Matt Maiocco wrote that Lance will be comfortable in leading the Niners even if Garoppolo is on the sidelines.
If Garoppolo is still with the 49ers after he receives medical clearance, I assume he'll want answers and the team will be honest with him. Otherwise, he'd be left twisting in the wind as it pertains to his status on the team and his non-guaranteed $24.2M salary for the season.

Maiocco also tweeted, “If Garoppolo is still with the 49ers after he receives medical clearance, I assume he’ll want answers and the team will be honest with him. What Will Happen To Garoppolo?
The 49ers must explicitly communicate to Garoppolo that Lance will be the starting quarterback.
Having that conversation will clear a lot of uncertainty leading into the 2022 season.
That’s how far the team should go as far as being honest with him.
If he ends up staying with the team with no trade in place, he must also consider taking a lower salary.
Having a lower cap count might lead NFL teams to reconsider trade talks.
