Jimmy Garoppolo is heading back into the headlines for the 2023 NFL offseason.
While he was the subject of trade rumors in 2022, the veteran quarterback remained with the San Francisco 49ers.
However, he made a deal with his team which makes him a free agent in 2023.
With him set to become a free agent, NFL teams will be calling for his services.
While the offseason is yet to begin, there are two teams who should have an interest in Garoppolo for 2023.
New York Jets
Everyone knows the New York Jets have big issues with their quarterback situation.
While they could be eyeing Aaron Rodgers as the main option, getting Garoppolo might be their next option.
ESPN’s Rich Cimini sees the Jets going after the veteran quarterback if they can’t land Rodgers.
Jets talk: On @WFAN660 now @RichCimini says he doesn’t get the sense “Carr is the Jets guy.”
Says they’ll definitely make play for Rodgers, and Garoppolo would be in play if Rodgers chooses elsewhere.#TakeFlight— jamie stuart (@jamiestuartTV) February 5, 2023
A move for Garoppolo might be a better choice, as he won’t carry a large hit on the salary cap.
San Francisco 49ers
The one team who should focus on Garoppolo the most is his current team, the 49ers.
They head into their 2023 offseason with quarterbacks Trey Lance and Brody Purdy having injuries.
While Lance is expected to return for the start of the 2023 season, Purdy’s injury will probably prevent him from playing some of 2023.
With their quarterback issues, they need a veteran quarterback.
If Lance has a setback during his recovery, it can derail the 49ers’ 2023 season before it begins.
That’s why they need to have an interest in the quarterback they currently have on their roster.
