After San Francisco 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo suffered a foot injury early in their Sunday contest versus the Miami Dolphins, his status and timetable moving forward are unknown.
He is reportedly looking over his medical options, but a lengthy recovery period could cut into offseason preparations for next year.
Shanahan said it might be that Jimmy Garoppolo avoided the dreaded lisfranc foot injury. He is seeking opinions from specialists right now. Bottom line: His diagnosis/prognosis has not yet been nailed down. https://t.co/oNlRlM1Gxw

Garoppolo is in the final year of his contract, and injury or no injury, the 49ers have to make a decision on whether to keep him around, as well as whether he will start over the inexperienced Trey Lance, who is recuperating from his own season-ending injury.
Brock Purdy, a rookie who was the last pick in April’s NFL draft, will be under center for the rest of this season, but as far as next season is concerned, an experienced QB2 will be needed, especially given how injury-prone Garoppolo has always been.
San Francisco should look into trading for one of these two quarterbacks during the offseason in order to ensure it has enough depth at that position.
Mitchell Trubisky
This would be a hard trade to pull off perhaps, as Trubisky’s base salary will be $8 million next season.
But the 49ers have to think beyond Garoppolo’s tenure with the team, as he is 31 years of age.
Trubisky is 28, and while he’s somewhat young, he also has four years of experience as the Chicago Bears’ starting QB, and now that he has been benched in favor of Kenny Pickett, would the Pittsburgh Steelers possibly be open to a trade?
Sam Darnold
If the Carolina Panthers go with P.J. Walker under center moving forward, could they be persuaded to let go of Darnold?
Darnold is 25, making him a younger option, and he is a California native, as he grew up in Orange County and played his college ball at the University of Southern California.
